Thaipusam is celebrated annually in the 10th month Tamil Calender called thai.Thaipusam is celebrated annually during full moon which falls between 15th January to 15th February. For the year 2011, the festival will be celebrated on the 20th of January 2011.

Thaipusam is the day, where Lord Murugan is said to have received his spear (vel) from his mother.For Hindu devotees, whose vows has been fulfilled, this is the day for them to pay penance to Lord Muruga. There are various ways to pay the penance. Most of the devotees will carry a "Kavadi" with " vel" pierced in their tongue up the 272 steps to pay their penance. With various drum beats resonating around the cave compound the atmosphere at the temple is a site to beholden.

Hindus of Malaysia will pay homage to hill abode of Lord Muruga at Batu Caves. This day, famously called as Thaipusam attracts almost close to a million hindus and local and foreign tourist. For many Thaipusam is an event not to be missed.

Hill abodes of Lord Muruga, Batu Caves is located 15Km north of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. The tallest statue of Lord Muruga at the entrance to the hill cave welcomes visitors.
